Abstract

This study investigates the impact of bans on Generative AI Content (AIGC) on knowledge sharing in online Q&A communities. Since the launch of ChatGPT, several communities on the Stack Exchange network have successively implemented AIGC bans. By collecting data from the platform, this study conducts an empirical analysis using a difference-in-differences (DiD) methodology.

The results show that the AIGC ban increased users' demand for knowledge but decreased the overall efficiency of answers. Further analysis reveals that this effect is particularly pronounced in non-STEM communities. The underlying mechanism is revealed by comparing the differences between human-created and AI-generated content in terms of informational effectiveness and social interactivity. The study also discusses the implications of these findings for community governance and platform policy-making.
